My Au Pair Experience
First, What is an Au Pair? It is a cultural exchange program for people between 18 and 26. You live with a family and help them take care of their children. You can stay from one year to 24 months. While you are there, you get to experience their culture & traditions and travel.
I chose to become an Au Pair because I did not know what to study. I went to the USA for one year. I lived with a family with three children. It was a huge step out of my comfort zone. That year helped me grow so much. I learned independence, working with my money and getting out of my comfort zone. I travelled to 9 states and saw so many amazing places. I made best friends for life. My mom and brother visited me for three weeks in the summer. It was so much fun. They got to see the USA too, and we explored it together. You form a great bond with your host children. I know the two older ones, and I will always have contact. I will definitely visit them in the future.
Being an Au Pair is not always perfect as it seems to be. I was super homesick. Homesickness is hard because you don’t always know how to deal with it. I just went out with my friends and tried to keep myself busy. You also deal with dirty diapers, running noses, and sometimes misbehaving kids. But you just need to find a way how to deal with it. Children are different, and you need to use different ways to discipline them.
The overall experience for me was amazing. I learned so much and made awesome memories!
